Added by: june, at 04/28/2010 06:50:21Women as Entrepreneurs in India
Women owned businesses are highly increasing in the economies of almost all countries. The hidden entrepreneurial potentials of women have gradually been changing with the growing sensitivity to the role and economic status in the society. Skill, knowledge and adaptability in business are the main reasons for women to emerge into business ventures.'Women Entrepreneur' is a person who accepts challenging role to meet her personal needs and become economically independent. A strong desire to do something positive is an inbuilt quality of entrepreneurial women, who is capable of contributing values in both family and social life. With the advent of media, women are aware of their own traits, rights and also the work situations. The glass ceilings are shattered and women are found indulged in every line of business from pappad to power cables. The challenges and opportunities provided to the women of digital era are growing rapidly that the job seekers are turning into job creators. They are flourishing as designers, interior decorators, exporters, publishers, garment manufacturers and still exploring new avenues of economic participation. In India, although women constitute the majority of the total population, the entrepreneurial world is still a male dominated one. Women in advanced nations are recognized and are more prominent in the business world. But the Indian women entrepreneurs are facing some major constraints like -
a) Lack of confidence - In general, women lack confidence in their strength and competence. The family members and the society are reluctant to stand beside their entrepreneurial growth. To a certain extent, this situation is changing among Indian women and yet to face a tremendous change to increase the rate of growth in entrepreneurship.
b) Socio-cultural barriers - Women's family and personal obligations are sometimes a great barrier for succeeding in business career. Only few women are able to manage both home and business efficiently, devoting enough time to perform all their responsibilities in priority.
c) Market-oriented risks - Stiff competition in the market and lack of mobility of women make the dependence of women entrepreneurs on middleman indispensable. Many business women find it difficult to capture the market and make their products popular. They are not fully aware of the changing market conditions and hence can effectively utilize the services of media and internet.
d) Motivational factors - Self motivation can be realized through a mind set for a successful business, attitude to take up risk and behavior towards the business society by shouldering the social responsibilities. Other factors are family support, Government policies, financial assistance from public and private institutions and also the environment suitable for women to establish business units.
e) Knowledge in Business Administration - Women must be educated and trained constantly to acquire the skills and knowledge in all the functional areas of business management. This can facilitate women to excel in decision making process and develop a good business network.
f) Awareness about the financial assistance - Various institutions in the financial sector extend their maximum support in the form of incentives, loans, schemes etc. Even then every woman entrepreneur may not be aware of all the assistance provided by the institutions. So the sincere efforts taken towards women entrepreneurs may not reach the entrepreneurs in rural and backward areas.
g) Exposed to the training programs - Training programs and workshops for every type of entrepreneur is available through the social and welfare associations, based on duration, skill and the purpose of the training program. Such programs are really useful to new, rural and young entrepreneurs who want to set up a small and medium scale unit on their own.
h) Identifying the available resources - Women are hesitant to find out the access to cater their needs in the financial and marketing areas. In spite of the mushrooming growth of associations, institutions, and the schemes from the government side, women are not enterprising and dynamic to optimize the resources in the form of reserves, assets mankind or business volunteers.
Highly educated, technically sound and professionally qualified women should be encouraged for managing their own business, rather than dependent on wage employment outlets. The unexplored talents of young women can be identified, trained and used for various types of industries to increase the productivity in the industrial sector. A desirable environment is necessary for every woman to inculcate entrepreneurial values and involve greatly in business dealings. The additional business opportunities that are recently approaching for women entrepreneurs are:
Eco-friendly technology
Bio-technology
IT enabled enterprises
Event Management
Tourism industry
Telecommunication
Plastic materials
Vermiculture
Mineral water
Sericulture
Floriculture
Herbal & health care
Food, fruits & vegetable processing
Empowering women entrepreneurs is essential for achieving the goals of sustainable development and the bottlenecks hindering their growth must be eradicated to entitle full participation in the business. Apart from training programs, Newsletters, mentoring, trade fairs and exhibitions also can be a source for entrepreneurial development. As a result, the desired outcomes of the business are quickly achieved and more of remunerative business opportunities are found. Henceforth, promoting entrepreneurship among women is certainly a short-cut to rapid economic growth and development. Let us try to eliminate all forms of gender discrimination and thus allow 'women' to be an entrepreneur at par with men.

Added by: roxyrohit, at 03/23/2010 16:25:45Entrepreneurship is the act of being an entrepreneur, which is a French word meaning "one who undertakes an endeavor". Entrepreneurs assemble resources including innovations, finance and business acumen in an effort to transform innovations into economic goods. This may result in new organizations or may be part of revitalizing mature organizations in response to a perceived opportunity. The most obvious form of entrepreneurship is that of starting new businesses; however, in recent years, the term has been extended to include social and political forms of entrepreneurial activity. When entrepreneurship is describing activities within a firm or large organization it is referred to as intra-preneurship and may include corporate venturing, when large entities spin-off organizations.[1]
According to Paul Reynolds, entrepreneurship scholar and creator of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, "by the time they reach their retirement years, half of all working men in the United States probably have a period of self-employment of one or more years; one in four may have engaged in self-employment for six or more years. Participating in a new business creation is a common activity among U.S. workers over their course of their careers." [2] And in recent years has been documented by scholars such as David Audretsch to be a major driver of economic growth in both the United States and Western Europe.
Entrepreneurial activities are substantially different depending on the type of organization that is being started. Entrepreneurship ranges in scale from solo projects (even involving the entrepreneur only part-time) to major undertakings creating many job opportunities. Many "high value" entrepreneurial ventures seek venture capital or angel funding in order to raise capital to build the business. Angel investors generally seek returns of 20-30% and more extensive involvement in the business.[3] Many kinds of organizations now exist to support would-be entrepreneurs, including specialized government agencies, business incubators, science parks, and some NGOs. In more recent times, the term entrepreneurship has been extended to include elements not related necessarliy to business formation activity such as conceptualizations of entrepreneurship as a specific mindset (see also entrepreneurial mindset) resulting in entrepreneurial initiatives e.g. in the form of social entrepreneurship, political entrepreneurship, or knowledge entrepreneurship have emerged.

Added by: ChristineT, at 02/18/2010 20:41:55Hi everyone. I am just starting out here on CCC. My mother in law sent me the links to it. I too have a small little business. Mine however was kind of stumbled upon. I had to quit my job at a local hospital...doing the work that I LOVE...to have a couple of brain surgeries. Now..I can no longer work. So I started tinkering around with arts and crafts. Painting...sewing...you all know the drill I am sure. I finally found something that I actually enjoy. Making jewelry. It started to really pile up. Sooo hubby and I heard about Etsy. So I started a little shop at http://BeadedIndulgences.etsy.com Since I am new here...and would love to get to meet and make some new friends. If any of you see anything on there that catches your eye. Just type in CCC Member in the "message to seller" box when you get to the check out. I will give you a 25% discount on your order. I will just refund that back to your Paypal accnt. Everything that isn't supplies or destash comes wrapped like a little gift. My daughter Tay loves to help me out....so she really gets into that part. She is amazing.
I can't wait to start chatting and getting to know the members on here. This looks like a really fun site. -

Added by: Janine1, at 05/18/2009 02:38:40By the grace of God our business, Blue Sage Naturals, is doing well. We are the only suppliers of certified organic sea buckthorn seed oil in any country you can name. We use this oil in Seabuckthorn Shampoo, Seabuckthorn soap, Relief N Rescue and other products. What does it do? I can only speak for myself, I can't say what my customers have told me [legalities yanno]. Gets rid of rosacea, eczema, stops hair loss, encourages hair growth. So much so that the bald spots on hubby's head are no longer bald! Works on acne, dry skin. We are blessed. We have taken a small hit on sales, however, the Lord provides and brings in sales, via word of mouth and search engines. We have excellent products.

Still need to supplement my income because we lost my husbands income a while ago. But we are actually able to pay bills (not all of course) with the income I am able to generate.

Added by: LJRaymond, at 03/14/2009 22:46:31Hello! I'm new but I wanted to say that my graphic design business is starting to pick up even with the weakened economy. I've found businesses, whether small or single-owner, still need the services of a graphic designer. In some cases they've had to let go of their own designer, and I'm happy to provide this service to them. Most cases are flyers and brochures to further advertise their business, but getting the word out is pivotal for all businesses during this crunch time in the economy. You've got to let people know you're still in business. Thank you! :)

Added by: , at 02/03/2009 09:32:30Hi. So glad to join a group where there are so many self-starting entrepreneurs in their own business. Would love to share and network about all the trials and tribulations of having your own business. I'm learning as I go as i am sure all of us have done. http://mywherehaus.com is just starting to get off the ground and slowly but surely I am taking it to the next level. This economy has everyone hurting and people are being very selective about where they spend their money. Mywherehaus.com is a simple straightfoward site and offers a variety of items that will accommodate many bargain hunters on their search for deals. Browsing thru mywherehaus.com is a cinch. At a time when everyone is choosing to watch their pennies, it is great that we are out there offering our services and products at affordable prices. People will still need to buy gifts, housewares, or simply a "me time" gift for themselves. Saving gas, time and effort is definitely a trend in this busy time of ours and so glad that even with the sign of the times, we woman entrepreneurs can offer some value. Looking forward to hearing from all of you out there and feel free to contact me at contact@mywherehaus.com for any networking or chatting and chewing! Thanks!

Added by: Loretta, at 01/21/2009 19:55:37My Scentsy business is doing well. It's good to be able to offer affordable products that people can enjoy. I agree that people still want the little things that make their home a great place to be.

Added by: tuppertammy, at 01/01/2009 12:40:01My Tupperware business is booming ! Like what was said in previous posts - people are staying home more and Cooking meals more than going out to restaurants. So we have the answer to making quick healthy meals and also items that stand the test of time. everyone remembers growing up with our products and in fact STILL have them - the lifetime warrenty we have is amazing too - and there are just not enough of us out there to take care of the demand and so people shop online and the Co gets the rewards. That business belongs to the conultants!!! I am on a recruiting mission this year , so if anyone want to talk about the benefits to your household by joining us for fun, food, friends let me know. I wish you all the best in life and enjoy the ride!!

Added by: Linda D., at 12/03/2008 22:12:47My Premier Designs Jewelry business is also doing well in the weak economy. Women can afford more high fashion jewelry than jewelry store prices, and can update their look and have variety for a fraction of the cost of other jewelry. It's also a great business for stay at home moms to earn extra money, or women can host a party and earn free jewelry so it has been surviving the economy well.

Added by: Susan07, at 10/21/2008 00:56:53I would be interested in gold canyon candles. How do I go about ordering from you??? Susan
-
Added by: Nancy, at 10/19/2008 18:19:24I am excited that my Gold Canyon Candle business is adjusting well with the current economy. Since people are spending less for recreation and entertainment they are staying home more. They want their homes to be
a place where they can relax and escape from what is going on outside the home. They are buying my products (candles, home decor and body care) which range from $6 - $60 with the
average price being $20. You will find that most direct sales companies do better in a weak economy.
