There's been a lot in the news lately about Cap and Trade as part of the Stimulus Package and America's commitment to climate change. If you're like me, the discussion can be a little daunting and techno-speak.
Cap and Trade. Most manufacturing processes cause carbon dioxide emissions. These companies have to obtain a government permit that prescribes the levels or cap for these emissions. Other companies that are more efficient can manufacture below their prescribed cap and trade the surplus. These are the basics of cap and trade.
Why you should care about it? First, these will be your tax dollars at work in regulating industries. Second, industry carbon emissions are part of America's global impact on climate change. Think Kyoto Accord by the rest of the world. Third, and most important, how we regulate industrial emissions is critically important to our long-term environmental health, ... ..especially our children.
