I know, it seems ridiculous that "drink water" qualifies as a tip, but you'd be surprised just how many folks lose a day or two of exploration simply due to a lack of water. You've heard to drink BEFORE you're thirsty, because if you are thirsty it's too late and you are already dehydrated. Well, when you are traveling drink two to three times more water than you would at home. This will help you adjust to different climates, time zones, and foods.
Start drinking more water when the journey begins. Do NOT drink alcohol on the airplane if you can help it. This will dehydrate you. If you do, compensate with even MORE water.
Always, ALWAYS, at all times, have a water bottle on you. NEVER forget!
Be a good example. I recommend purchasing a re-usable water bottle for your journey. If possible stay away from re-usable plastic bottles because the plastics can leach into your water especially in hotter climates. Carrying your own bottle will allow you to leave plastic bottles with vendors to encourage recycling.
