First impressions count - there
are no ifs, ands or buts about it. The
entry is an ideal place to make a grand statement in your home! Take time to think of the message you want
your home to convey and use the entry as a microcosm to convey it. If you're an antiquer like I am, you'll want
to put your best pieces front and center, letting them set the decorating tone much
like your purse or shoes do for your wardrobe.
Because the entrance is small, it doesn't need much - thus, in my book, fewer
purchases equal a larger budget per item. Invest in quality, buy statement pieces and
pull out family heirlooms. Paint the
walls or better yet, splash-out on that ridiculously expensive wallpaper you
eyed for the dining room but couldn't afford for a larger room.
Every entrance hall needs a mirror - pick an antique gilt-framed mirror or set
the tone with a Venetian twist. Choose a
table or buffet (with storage) to set an antique blue & white bowl alongside
a bouquet of fresh flowers.
Don't crowd your entry. Go for a clean
look with as much open space as possible.
And for goodness sakes, as tempting as it is, don't use the entrance as
your dumping grounds! Pop decorating
culture advises on the use of storage do-dads and boxes, but these are best
hidden inside closets, kitchens, laundry-rooms and by the back door. Don't put them on display for first
impressions! Do you want guests to feel
warm fuzzies when entering or to remember they need to stop by The Container
Store?
Last but not least, imagine if your boss (or mother-in-law) were to pop by for
a few minutes, only taking time to step into your entry ... what would you want her
impression of your home life to be?
Remember that in the entrance, first impressions count!
