Nearly
a decade ago - just before moving to Paris - I gave my hand-me-down American sofa-bed
to the Goodwill, and the first item on my European shopping agenda was a new
divan! I wanted something French that
hinted towards the past, and something utterly sinkable. Instead, I mostly found modern, mainstreamed
sofas that didn't look like I'd sink into them drifting into dreamland before
turning a page in my Marie Clair. That
is, until I stepped onto the Boulevard St Germain and discovered Roche
Bobois. This international home
furniture store had me at Bonjour.
Roche Bobois has 3 collections in differing furniture styles - Les
Contemporains (considered the most avant-garde of their designs), Les Voyages
(inspired by the influences of far-away places) and, my favorite, Les
Provincials (the charms of the past la franaise). The Les Provincials collection with its
patchwork cushions, embroideries and stripes (plus slip covers that fit so
snuggly you'd never guess they were removable & machine washable) pair
perfectly with an antique-driven home.
My own living room is wall-to-wall antiques, filled with precious and
precious-only-to-me items from the last few centuries, but my one concession to
modern living is my sofa. A room filled
with delicate lines and little legs on Marquetry tables is difficult to pair "concessions to modern living", but
Roche Bobois makes it simple. Perhaps
it's because they're French and the French have always been genius at blending
the past and the present, but a couch from Roche Bobois is timeless - perhaps
an antique of the future!
And don't think you have to go to Paris to buy Roche Bobois - this furniture
store has over 90 locations world-wide with 30 stores sprinkled across America!
I give Roche Bobois The Antiques Diva
Seal: "Diva Tested, Diva Approved"!
