When the nurse showed you how to bathe your baby in the hospital it looked so easy. She didn't tell you how slippery and scary bath-time can sometimes be. Slip, Slide and Squirm are just a few adjectives that come to mind. Where is Grandma when you need her? Here are some tips to make "Bath Time 101" a little less frightening.

Before you even think of turning on the water, have all the supplies you need and turn off the fan. No last minute running out if you forgot something. Checklist: towel, baby shampoo, baby wash, cream, two diapers(just in case), outfit, hairbrush, receiving blanket, baby!
- You only need to fill the tub or sink with enough water to cover your baby's tummy.
- Test the water with your elbow or the inside of your wrist.. It should be warm, not hot, to the touch.
- Take your baby's diaper off last. Naked babies (as you will soon learn), usually go to the bathroom as soon as they are naked. Don't get upset this is very natural.
- Always wash your baby from the bottom of her toes to the top of her head. Not all babies like having their hair washed and it's no fun to start with tears!
- To wash your newborn's hair, put the shampoo on with your hand and use a washcloth to remove it. Many babies are not happy getting water in their eyes.
- If your older baby doesn't like water on her face, purchase a shampoo visor, available at many baby stores.
- Picking baby bath products are personal. Pick what you like best. If your baby develops redness or a rash, switch to a different product.
- When putting powder on your baby, always sprinkle it in your hand first and then on the baby's skin. Never shake it directly, as it could get into your baby's eyes, nose, mouth or lungs. This applies to baby lotion as well.
- Purchase some bubbles to blow at bath-time and watch your baby's face light up!
- Don't feel like you have to give your baby a bath each day. Three to four times a week is fine. A warm washcloth to wipe a dirty face works fine.
- Don't forget to have fun washing, singing and playing. There is nothing cuter than a happy, squeaky, clean baby to make your heart smile.
NEVER, EVER LEAVE YOUR BABY UNATTENDED, NOT EVEN FOR ONE SECOND!!!
Accidents happen. There is nothing more important than your baby's safety!
