Sharing life with furry family members can be one of our greatest joys. Unbridled, unconditional love in exchange for a biscuit, a ball toss, or a brisk bellyrub? An even sweeter deal than the historic $24 purchase of Manhattan Island from the Indians. To be sure, one of man's (and woman's) greatest gifts. But also, one of our biggest commitments.

Before taking on the responsibilities of bringing a pet into your life, it is important to determine what type of animal would best fit into your particular lifestyle. Is it a dog, cat, rabbit, or perhaps a guinea pig? Should it be large or small? Puppy or adult? A high powered player or couch potato? Purebred or mixed breed?

Regardless of what species, size, activity level, breed, or age you determine is right for you, an animal rescue organization --- repositories for hundreds of perfectly wonderful pets who have become homeless either by accident or owner intention (all too often through no fault of their own) --- will likely have what you're looking for. There are many benefits to adopting from one of these groups, including that the animals in their care are customarily evaluated for temperament and behavioral issues, are up-to-date on vaccinations, and have been spayed or neutered. Additionally, you'll enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you've saved the life of a displaced animal who is looking for a second chance in a new forever home.

You may also find your perfect match with the help of cyberspace! Online search engines can help you to find potential sources for your ideal pet. Simply type your desired species (e.g. dog) or breed (e.g. Golden Retriever) followed by the word "adoption" or "rescue" and your city or state (e.g. San Diego, CA) into the search field. You may be shocked to see how many listings come up. For an even more fine-tuned exploration by species, breed, gender, age, size ... as narrowly as by zip code ... try the easy-to-use Quick Search feature at www.Petfinder.com. Most listings even contain a photo or two to help you start the love affair even before you physically meet!

My friends, it IS possible to bring a dream pet into your life through adoption. I've done it no less than four times over the course of the past decade, most recently in 2007 with the addition of an adorable 14 month old, completely housebroken, eager-to-please Corgi/Australian Shepherd Mix who I named Tracey. She is proof positive that when adding a pet to your life, adoption IS a fabulous option!
