For the last week I have talked with so many parents (via blogs, in person and on the radio) about the subject of 'parenting' and I'm shocked (and not shocked at the same time) at what is going on. The landscape of our lives have changed so much, including; our country, politics, the Internet, our school systems, lack of budgets, foreclosures, job layoffs and the rate of divorce. It's overwhelming! AND it has impacted our parenting style dramatically. The parents I've interviewed are (for the most part) trying to get through the day, it's 'survival' time. In survival times we stick to the basics like, are the kids safe and fed. Often in survival mode we are not enforcing rules or boundaries, we have less quality time, we have less joy and fun, we have less learning/lesson moments, we don't parent from our values, we aren't 'working' on growing as parents, and we have less conscientious about parenting overall. I have found that a lot of parents feel guilty about what is going on so they give the kids whatever they want and it becomes a free-for-all. The problem with that is that it switches the paradigm in the home to the kids being in control/leading verses the parents being in control. So, my coaching tip of the day is that if you are going through rough times/struggling/survival mode, then take a few minutes to recollect your 'parenting style mindset' and create a plan. Even if you take baby steps start today; reclaim leadership of your home and parent with intention (and values).
