As we speak, this first week in March, while our tax dollars are trying to shore up a failing economy fueled by greed, stupidity, and the machinations of "corporate fat-cats" - EPA is making an important environmental decision. Don't blink or you'll miss America's big chance to finally get on the road to reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
California has been lobbying, low these many years, to reverse our doomed dependence on gas guzzling automobiles which are the number one source of carbon emissions. OK, that sounds a little alarmist so here's the exact language from Repower America:
"The Environmental Protection Agency is considering reversing a Bush administration decision that has prevented California and other states from taking action to reduce global warming pollution from cars.
Stricter vehicle emissions standards are an important step
in fighting climate change. Pollution from cars accounts for about 20% of
carbon dioxide emissions in this country, yet this CO2 remains unregulated.
With action from the EPA, California
will have the authority to reduce its emissions and immediately encourage
automakers to build the cleaner cars we need.
The EPA decision will also pave the way for 13 other states to implement
similar policies, covering nearly 40% of the car market. This will provide a
major incentive to the auto industry -- igniting the clean energy economy and
helping to get us on a path to economic recovery."
You would think that this would be an obvious step in the right direction but this is where YOU get to help save the planet. This is such a big effort that it'll take each of our voices to make the change we need. You can join RePower America and Al Gore to focus specifically on achieving 100% clean electricity in 10 years. Think of it, a cleaner planet - "by the people, and for the people".
Besides, now that we're part owners of the car industry we can at least insure that those "fat cat's" stop burning up the ozone layer with their recreational private jets.
