I know when you first read this, you're all going to think I'm crazy. As in lost my mind, should be committed, no marbles left. But that is a risk I'm willing to take, fellow fashionistas. For you. For fashion. For warmth.

So, here goes. I think you should all go out and buy leg warmers.

All right, settle down, settle down. I'm not talking about the crazy Flashdance version; I'm talking about these amazingly fantastic warmers that you pull on over your heels. So, you don't have to buy a new pair of boots this season (expensive!), you get even more use out of your heels AND your legs will stay warm. I've been wearing mine over tights with my skirts and then taking them off when I get places (I added buttons to the back to spice them up a bit).

Now, I know that regardless of how much I tell some of you that they are not really leg warmers, you will never, ever believe me. So, we'll move onto the next best thing to wear with skirts this winter season - tights. I get a lot of questions regarding tights, which basically boil down to this: "How can I wear tights without looking like a moron?" What an excellent question!

Here are a couple of rules of thumb to follow:

1. It's hard to wear tights with flats and a skirt, unless you are five-years old or incredibly hip. For most of us, pairing tights and flats makes us look shorter than we are or a bit precious.

2. Tights and boots look fantastic. I know this article is about alternatives to boots, but if you already own a pair of boots, adding tights is very fashionable (and warm).

3. Want some drama? Add a colored tight. A burgundy or navy color can be a great place to start; if you're a bit braver, there are lots of bright options out there. Remember though, colored tights are an accent or accessory, so keep everything else very simple. Think a black dress with maroon tights or a brown dress with navy tights. You get the idea ...

4. Black is always in, white not so much. Black tights (especially paired with black shoes) are very slimming and a classic look. White tights (again, unless you are five or a hipster) make you look bigger and very, well, dated.

5. Have a pair of bright shoes? Pair them with black tights and a black dress and pow! Instant fabulousness.

6. Try 'em textured. Tights with patterns or textures (think fishnet, but cooler) are a great way to spice up your outfit without spending a lot of cash. Again, just remember they are an accessory, so you'll want to keep everything else dignified.

The best part about tights is that they're a low commitment accessory, meaning you can buy a pair or two for not much (I've bought versions at Target, Old Navy, Macys, Forever21 ... just about anywhere), try them out and see if you like them. If you don't, it's not a huge investment. And, if you do, you'll look fantastic and stay warm. Especially, if you pair them with leg warmers.
