This year we need to focus on
ways to unleash ourselves to find contentment and wholeness. And, our nutrition is the best place to start
at the beginning of 2009. The Latin origin of resolution (as in New Year
resolutions!) means to 'loosen or release.'
How often have our New Year resolutions been viewed as tightening up our
behaviors! "I will lose 15 pounds ... I will
go to the gym four times a week ... I will not snack between meals." Let's change that now.
Andrew Weil believes that '"good nutrition nourishes the body, delights the senses and calms the mind." He makes eating into a positive, sensual experience, and we need to heed his wise advice. Another food expert, Alice Waters, offers easy, practical advice that echoes Dr. Weil's belief. Her advice focuses on enhancing (or releasing!) the virtues of cooking and eating.
- Eat seasonally. Choose seasonal food to inspire your menus, to give you a sense of time and place and to provide the most flavors.
- Cook simply, using all of your senses. Plan uncomplicated meals and enjoy the sensory pleasure of cooking.
- Eat together. Enjoy yourself or the company of your family at every meal. View a meal as a time of nourishment and communication.
- Shop locally. Find farmers' markets or local producers. The magazine Edible Phoenix is a great guide to markets, producers and restaurants that buy, produce or support local efforts.
- Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. And, tea counts!
- Remember, food is precious and should never be taken for granted!
In my salon juve, I see and feel the difference between well-nourished skin and nutritionally deprived skin. Skin is our largest organ and its beauty depends on your attitude and your nutritional habits. Seek non-invasive skin care programs that enhance, not distort your appearance.
